Why we build with PVC — and why your dog will thank you

Let's be real — Australian dogs are not delicate creatures. They're swimming in the ocean before 7am, rolling in something suspicious by 8, and riding shotgun on the ute tray by 9. They need gear that keeps up.

That's exactly why we built Jacaranda Collars around one hero material: PVC webbing. It's not the flashiest story, but it might just be the most important thing you read before buying your dog's next collar.

"We didn't choose PVC because it was the easy option. We chose it because nothing else comes close for real Aussie conditions."

Whether your dog is a kelpie running fence lines at dawn, a greyhound doing beach zoomies, or a pampered French bulldog who thinks the lounge is a throne — PVC does the job better. Here's why.

💧

100% waterproof

PVC doesn't absorb water. Not a drop. Dunk it, hose it, let your dog swim laps — it comes out exactly as it went in. No waterlogged webbing, no soaked-dog smell embedded forever.

🚫

Zero stink. Seriously.

Nylon and fabric collars are bacteria hotels. PVC is non-porous — bacteria and odours have nowhere to hide. Your dog can smell like whatever they want. Their collar won't.

Easy to clean

Wipe it with a damp cloth. Rinse it under the tap. Done. No soaking, no scrubbing, no washing machine. Two seconds and it's spotless.

💪

Built tough

Superior breaking load, abrasion-resistant, UV and salt-air proof. Paired with solid metal hardware — quality buckles and D-rings built to last.

🌈

Bright & bold colours

PVC holds colour brilliantly — rich, vibrant, fade-resistant hues from Royal Blue to Hot Pink to Fluro Yellow. Your dog will be the best-dressed on the beach.

🐾

Soft on skin

Smooth and soft against your dog's coat — no rubbing, no chafing, no irritation. Strong enough for the biggest dogs, gentle enough for the tiniest ones.

And then we went and solved a problem nobody else bothered to

Martingale collars are brilliant for escape artists — greyhounds, whippets, huskies, and any dog who tucks their chin and reverses out of a standard collar in seconds. A martingale tightens gently when they pull and releases completely when they're not. It's a genuinely better design.

There's just one problem. Traditional martingales have no buckle. You have to slip them over your dog's head every single time. Which sounds fine until you've wrestled a wet, excited kelpie into one at the beach car park while they're already halfway to the water.

So we fixed it.

Our PVC martingale with adjustable buckle from $29

Everything a martingale should be — the gentle tightening, the clean release, the security for escape-prone breeds — with one addition that changes everything: a proper buckle. Clip it on, clip it off. Adjust the fit as needed. No wrestling. No fuss.

You might have seen Biothane martingales sold at a significant premium. Here's something worth knowing: Biothane is simply a brand name for coated PVC webbing. You're paying for a label, not a better product. Our PVC martingale with adjustable buckle gives you identical waterproof, non-porous, easy-clean performance — handmade in Australia — at a price that actually makes sense. That's how we do things at Jacaranda Collars.

So what exactly is PVC webbing?

PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride — a synthetic polymer used in demanding applications for decades. When made into webbing for dog collars, it creates a material that is fundamentally different from nylon or cotton in one key way: it's non-porous.

That means it can't absorb moisture, bacteria, fungi, or odour-causing compounds. The surface stays smooth and clean no matter what your dog puts it through. Add in UV resistance, high tensile strength, and the ability to hold vibrant dye colours without fading, and you've got a collar material that was basically made for Australian conditions.

We're a small Aussie business. We handcraft every single collar ourselves, and we're obsessive about the materials we use — because these collars go on dogs we genuinely care about.

We've tested our collars on everything from tiny dachshunds to absolute units of Rottweilers. On beach dogs, farm dogs, city dogs, and dogs who seem personally offended by the concept of staying clean. And PVC has never let us — or them — down.

We love dogs. That's not a tagline, that's just the truth.

Handmade in Australia. Tough enough for the ute tray. Bright enough for the beach. Easy enough to wipe clean in two seconds flat.
